Fabric Buying & Care Guide
What is a FQ?
A Fat Quarter (FQ) is a quarter of a metre, measuring 50cm by 55cm. Multiple FQs of the same fabric will be sent as a continuous piece wherever possible, unless you request otherwise. If we are unable to supply as a continuous piece we will contact you and place your order on hold until we have a response. Although most of our fabrics come on 114cm bolts, we underestimate the width to allow for the manufacturing edge, so your fabric may be wider than our official sizes.
The table below will help illustrate fabric purchased in one design, we refer to a quarter metre (FQ) as a unit:-
1 Unit = 55cm wide x 50cm long
2 Units = 110cm wide x 50cm long
3 Units = 110cm wide x 75cm long
4 Units = 110cm wide x 100cm long
5 Units = 110cm wide x 125cm long
6 Units = 110cm wide x 150cm long
Please be aware that some fabrics may vary in width and this will be detailed in the fabric description.
The majority of our clearance fabrics are sold per half metre but this will also be detailed in the product information.
Machine wash warm or cold with like colours. If pre-washing, never wash dark colours with light. Purchase some colour catchers, it is always better to be safe than sorry. Do not dry clean. Do not bleach. Tumble dry medium setting. Remove promptly. use warm iron if necessary.
Pre-wash or No-pre-wash?
It really is down to personal preference. We speak to many of our regular customers every day and all have their own personal ideas. The most important advice we can give, is, do not pre-wash your fabric after you have cut it out for sewing. Never pre-wash fabrics that you have purchased pre-cut, such as layer cakes, jelly rolls and smaller cuts, as you may find that they may not then be the size that you need. It may sound obvious to many of us but, for new quilters or crafters, there is a lot to learn. With all of our quality fabrics, allow up to 5% for shrinkage.
